About

Born during the Depression, to immigrants from the Philippines and
Germany, she lived her early childhood in the Black Forest region of
Germany with her maternal grandmother in the early years of WWII. She
developed a passion for art when she was young and studied at the High
School of Art and Design in New York City.

She went on to earn her Masters degree in Fine Art from Tyler School
of Art at Temple University, where she met her future husband, Robert
Dain. Together they started a frame business in the back of a grocery
store with Alex recreating Renaissance style frames. This led to her
husband Robert starting Dain-Schiff Frames, with a storefront on
Madison Avenue while Alex carved and trained artisans at their factory
in Spanish Harlem.

Alex was talented in many mediums, and after the death of her husband,
she retreated to Long Island to work on her own art. She ultimately
chose East Hampton as her sanctuary and in 1976, she bought her ideal
reclusive Artist's retreat from Elaine DeKooning. Nestled in The
Springs, near Three Mile Harbor, Alex spent over 30 years in this
house and studio, making it her home, adding her own artistic touches
at every turn from the hand painted tile around the fireplace to
custom carved "rails" along the steps into the kitchen. Alex lived the
life of a true artist, creating paintings, pottery, sculptures, and
drawings. Please enjoy the prolific and diverse work of Alexandra
Dain.
